T-shirt #188: The Brady Bunch

I’ve had this one for a while, at least I’m pretty sure (do to my dad’s picture taking) that I wore it when I moved into Roncalli Hall. I also think I ordered it from my favorite catalog growing up (see website: www.thingsyouneverknew.com).

Even though The Brady Bunch’s last season ended the year I was born, it still was a big part of my TV viewing in the early 80’s. I would watch it with my brothers and sisters on channel 56 (UHF dial) right before dinner. We came up with “The Brady Bunch Game” which consisted simply of seeing who could name which episode it was first. Although I may not have won the most, I did set the record for quickest win when I screamed “The one where Marcia likes the dentist!” after seeing Marcia riding her bike towards the house for about 2.7 seconds. Life would be nice if it was more like sit-com world of The Brady Bunch. Problems may come, but things always work out in the end. Being surrounded by a loving family that sticks together makes things easier. In a way, my family reminds me of the Brady Bunch (just missing one “middle sister”), but with more serious issues. Instead of facing lost voices on Christmas morning, a bully named Buddy Hinton, a rival quarterback stealing plays, and a cursed Tiki, we faced things like Asthma, unchained German Shepherds, Juvenile Diabetes, Crohn’s, and cancer. But, we stuck together and we made it through all of them. If there’s anything better than having people in your life who love you no matter what, I’ve yet to find it…

T-shirt #187: CHAMPIONSHIP VINYL

Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable, or was I miserable because I listened to pop music? –Rob Gordon

This shirt was donated to me (all the way from the UK!) from Last Exit To Nowhere (www.lastexittonowhere.com/shop/product/championship-vinyl), and is the name of the record store from the movie High Fidelity (www.imdb.com/title/tt0146882/).

This movie (based on the book by Nick Hornby) is definitely one of my favorites. John Cusack stars as Rob Gordon, the owner of Championship Vinyl. Rob has just been dumped by his girlfriend, and he recounts his “Top 5” breakup stories while deciding to reach out to his ex-girlfriends in search for the reasons why things didn’t work out. In addition to Cusack’s great portrayal of a “tragic comic”, Jack Black plays a hilarious employee of the record store. The movie’s soundtrack is also amazing, and I can definitely relate to the scene where Rob organizes his music autobiographically!

T-shirt #186: BOSTON USA (Irish flag)

My name is Dave. I’m Irish, and I love Boston. I got this one at an Irish Festival in 2002 (I believe it was at Stonehill College), and I thought it would be a good “Leaving a very Irish-Celtic place to go home” shirt.

Had a great day with the fam yesterday. We started off with a great breakfast that included Tim Horton’s doughnuts. Then we went to Mass (ugh), but something funny happened as we were walking out of the church. To be funny, I tapped my nephew on the shoulder a couple of times, making him think that one of my sisters had done it. Then, “some lady” (as my nephew put it) tapped him on the shoulder. He immediately looked at me, and I said I didn’t do it. After both of my sisters also swore it wasn’t them, he thought he was out of suspects. I pointed to the woman, she admitted it, and we all started cracking up.

After church we spent a few hours at Dalvay Beach (it was hot for PEI!), and my nephew added to his “career” totals (his words!) in finding sea glass. I added to my career totals of beach resting time, and my dad added to his (very high) career totals of number of pictures taken.

We finished the 4th with a cookout, trip to Cow’s (I got some Chocolate Mud…Mmmmmmm), and some sparklers. It was a great 4th and a great way to end my mini-PEI vaca. Off to Massachusetts soon…

T-shirt #185: I'M SCARED OF EVERYTHING AND I VOTE

Happy 4th of July! This shirt was donated from Topatoco (www.topatoco.com), and I think it represents where our great country has gotten to since declaring independence in 1776. I see fear everywhere, and I see it separating this country. I see two sides blaming each other for everything, and I see people demonizing others for doing things they don’t understand (and therefore fear). I see fear brought on by religion making people say “It’s this way or no way”. I see people scared that others’ lifestyle choices are going to affect their own. I’m not saying it’s time for another revolution quite yet, but I wonder how much further we will get from these words that were declared 234 years ago. I wonder if all 50 states could agree to a modernized version of what this country stands for today…

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

T-shirt #184: I HEART MY VAGINA

This shirt, another of many donated to me by someone awesome and supportive (thanks JB!), was made as a fundraiser for the Vagina Monologues, and the money made from it was used towards a local domestic violence shelter. If you’ve never heard of it, The Vagina Monologues is a play that was written by Eve Ensler (see book version in picture) based on her interviews with women and tells many vagina-related stories. Originally performed by Eve Ensler, it was later performed by celebrities and now has been translated into many languages and performed all over the world.

The show led to the V-Day movement (www.vday.org/home), whose goal is to end violence against women worldwide. If you don’t think it’s a problem, just look at these statistics:

• According to a report in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, 28 % of US female veterans reported sexual assault during their careers, with consistent rates found across eras (Women's eNews, 3/30/03).

• In the US Central Command region, which includes Iraq and Afghanistan, the number of US servicewomen's reported sexual assaults rose from 24 in 2002 and 94 in 2003 to 123 in 2004. In the US military overall, the number of assaults reported by US servicewomen in 2004 increased to 1,275--25% higher than 2003's total, and 41% more than in 2002. (reported in the Washington Post, May 7, 2005)

• Nearly 20% of women in New Hampshire say they have been raped. (NH Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, University of New Hampshire, and state authorities, 2007)

• In a survey in South Africa, 25% of the young men admitted to having had sex with a woman without her consent, before he was 18 years of age (Human Rights Watch).

• In the late nineties in South Africa, 40% of reported rapes and attempted rapes targeted girls younger than 17 years of age. (Human Rights Watch)

• In a survey of women in Seattle's Puget Sound area, 11 percent said they had been raped by their partners. (Group Health Center for Health Studies, Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center and the University of Washington. Reported in Seattle Times, May 16, 2006)

• In Seoul, Korea, 22% of adult women said they had been the victims of rape and attempted rape (UNIFEM, www.stopvaw.org).

• In Colorado, 24% (1 in 4) of women and 6% (1 in 17) of men have experienced a completed or attempted sexual assault. This equates to over 11,000 women and men each year experiencing a sexual assault in Colorado. In 1997, there were 1,794 rapes reported to Colorado law enforcement. If compared to the 1998 Statewide Survey, these reports constitute only 16% of sexual assaults. (Sexual Assault in Colorado: Results of a 1998 Statewide Survey. 1998. Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault)

• One in six American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape, and 10% of sexual assault victims are men. (2004 National Crime Victimization Survey)

• In a 1995 study by the U.S. Centers for Disease control of 5,000 students at over 100 colleges, 20% of female college students or one in five answered “yes” to the question “In your lifetime have you been forced to submit to sexual intercourse against your will?” (Douglas, K. A. et al. (1997). Results from the 1995 national college health risk behavior survey. Journal of American College Health, 46, 55-66.)

A 1993 study in Alexandria, Egypt, found that 47% of female homicides were ‘honor' killings of the victim after she had been raped. (El Youssef New Presses, Cairo)

Although this has been mostly a serious blog (other than seeing me wearing this shirt), I will end by sharing my funny vagina-related story. It was last Christmas and my siblings, cousins, and close friends were gathered at my brothers for his usual “Christmas Cartoon Party”. My sister Megan took out a pad of Mad Libs to do in between The Grinch and Charlie Brown (or whatever had been voted in). It was my younger nephews turn, and he had to think of a plural noun. As he pondered and said “uh, um, uh”, my sister said, “Just say the first thing that comes to your mind.” He then blurted out, “Vaginas!” I actually started to cry I was laughing so hard.

T-shirt #183: TRAILER PARK BOYS: Bubbles with rocket



The second TPB shirt in my collection (see also: http://davestshirts.blogspot.com/2010/02/t-shirt-57-trailer-park-boys-parental.html), this was also a gift from my wonderful parents. I was wearing one time back home, and some dude said something like “awesome shirt”. I asked him if he watched the show, and he had no idea what I was talking about. I guess he just likes guys with thick glasses holding rockets. So I am up in Canada now, and thought it would be appropriate to wear my TPB shirt.

When I crossed the border yesterday, I wished the man at the booth a Happy Canada Day. He looked at my passport and said he expected me to be born in Canada after what I said. When he asked me what I was bringing in, he laughed when I said hockey equipment. He handed my passport back to me, and I asked him if he could stamp it (not normal procedure) since it was Canada Day. He gladly did (see picture).

The other picture is of the front yard at my parent’s cottage in PEI. The rock (most likely a meteorite) has been in as many family pictures as the Christmas tree, and was actually bigger when it was found and moved to the front of the cottage.

It was nice getting back up here last night. I watched an episode of TPB with my dad, and today was a typical “PEI Day” (sunny with some clouds, warm but not too hot, and a prefect breeze). Looking forward to Great Big Sea tomorrow night!

T-shirt #182: Canada

Happy Canada Day! Is there a better way to celebrate than by going up to visit our neighbors in the north? This shirt, one of many that had my sped students assuming I was Canadian over the years, was a gift (birthday, Xmas?) and I thought it would be perfect for my drive up to PEI today (That’s Prince Edward Island if you’re keeping score at home, and if you haven’t heard of it, maybe you’ve heard of Anne of Green Gables?).

I will be joining my family up on “The Island”, which is always a time for relaxing, reading, relaxing on the beach, listening to Celtic music, and relaxing. I think my parents have a two hour lead on me, but I won’t try too hard to catch up to them. I am excited because Saturday I will be seeing one of my favorite bands, Great Big Sea (www.greatbigsea.com), up in Canada for the first time. GBS is from Newfoundland and is huge in Canada, so it should be a blast (not that their New England shows aren’t great anyway!). I’m hoping since it is Canada Day they will stamp my passport when I cross, but we’ll see. Off to PEI!
